BACTERIAL HYPERSENSITIVITY General Information Bacterial hypersensitivity is an uncommon skin condition caused by a hypersensitivity (allergy) to certain bacteria. Affected pets scratch intensely and develop red sores, hair loss and scaliness. Initially the condition appears as individual sores. Later the sores enlarge and join, resulting in large areas of affected skin. Some of the sores may resemble "bull's eyes," with a red outer margin and a dark center. This should be differentiated from Lyme Disease. Other diseases such as allergies may be present in pets with bacterial hypersensitivity. Important Points in Treatment 1. When another disease that is treatable is causing the condition, or the affected pet is under 1 year of age, the chance for a complete cure is good. If, however, no underlying disease is detected, or the pet is over 1 year of age, the condition will probably require periodic antibiotic and/or immunologic treatment for the rest of the animal's life. 2. Many cases can be successfully treated with immunologic therapy, using a series of injections of a material made from the involved bacteria. Periodic booster injections are usually necessary. This treatment is recommend if poor response to antibiotics is noted or there are chronic and frequent recurrences 3. Long-term (6-10 weeks) antibiotic therapy is often necessary.
